Senators
Meet the Candidates!
Aden basir
Hello Seawolves!
My name is Aden Basir, and I am excited to be running for the position of At-Large Senator for USG. As a junior double majoring in sociology and political science at Stony Brook University, I am dedicated to improving campus life and the overall experience for all students here.
During my time at Stony Brook University, I have taken on several roles that have greatly improved my skills in communication and leadership. Working as a Peer Advisor in the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarship Services, I have assisted students with their financial aid concerns and questions, sharpening my ability to communicate clearly and help effectively. I have also handled public relations for the Muslim Students’ Association and the Gray Residence Hall Council, organizing events that brought our diverse student body together. My study abroad experience in Florence through Stony Brook University also opened my eyes to new cultures, improving my ability to adapt and appreciate different perspectives. My experiences have given me a thorough understanding of student needs and have prepared me to serve effectively as your senator. They have also instilled in me the dedication needed to be a strong advocate for you in the USG Senate.
My goal as your senator is to enhance student experiences at Stony Brook. This means advocating for initiatives that promote both academic and personal growth to ensure that our campus is a supportive, inclusive, and thriving environment for everyone. I plan to collaborate closely with students, faculty, and administration to create a community where everyone’s feedback is valued and where we all work together toward continuous improvement.
If elected, I promise to be a dependable, approachable, and committed representative who will always prioritize your interests. I am here to help improve our student life and ensure that Stony Brook remains a place where we can all be proud to belong.
Thank you for considering me as your representative in the USG Senate. I am eager to contribute positively and help make our time at Stony Brook more memorable.
Warm regards,
Aden Basir
Almas ahmad
Hi, I am Almas Ahmad and I running in the USG Senator election for the upcoming year.
As an international student, I had somewhat a tough time adjusting to campus; not because of the lack of resources but more so because majority of the people trying to help me were mostly locals, which was not a bad thing but it didn't help me as much.
I believe that this in turn also leads to homesickness and depression.
So below are the following things I would like to work towards
More widespread events relevant to Mental Health Services.
As a woman, I would also love if sanitary napkin dispensers are available in restrooms of atleast every building if it is not possible in every restroom. I think it is very important and could definitely save someone's day.
I would also love if there were more food options for students with religious dietary requirements. I noticed that several times on campus, I wasnt able to get a clear idea if the meat was halal or not so I had to stick to a vegetarian diet instead. And, in days of festivals such as Eid,Onam,Diwali,Chinese New Year, etc it would be highly motivating to have menus with special items dedicated to them such as "Eid specials" or "Chinese New Year Specials" and likewise as this would bring together different traditions and cultures and not make anyone feel left out.
I have also observed that a lot of bike stations on campus have malfunctioning bikes as well as keypads. It needs to be looked into.
The food items available should also have a proper calorie labels as this would help a lot of students monitor their calorie intake and meet their goals.
I also believe that our campus could be more colorful by having murals or tapestries on the walls around so as to make it look a little brighter than what it currently is.
Anmar gondal
Hey guys!
I’m Ammar Gondal, a Chemistry major with AMS and Creative Writing minors, and I’m running for USG Senate! I’m not the type who has run a million clubs or planned big events, but I love checking out all the cool things happening on campus. Since I experience SBU the way most students do, I think I bring a fresh, real perspective to the table.
Outside of campus, I stay busy taking care of my baby brothers and pursuing personal projects. Now, I want to bring that same energy to SBU and help students actually make things happen. That’s why I’m running—to push for ideas that make campus life more engaging, accessible, and innovative.
Build-a-Thing: Making Ideas Happen
SBU has so much talent across every field, from science and engineering to humanities and the arts, but there aren’t many opportunities for students to collaborate across disciplines and create something tangible. Build-a-Thing is all about connecting people with cool ideas to people who have the skills to bring them to life. Whether you’re an engineer looking for a designer, a writer looking for a coder, or someone with a brilliant idea but no clue where to start, this initiative will help match students with like-minded teammates to build projects that are actually useful. Think of it as a startup incubator, but way more chill, just students teaming up to make cool things happen.
Labsolutely!: Making Research Less Intimidating
One of the biggest challenges students face when trying to get involved in research is that it feels like an exclusive club where you need insider knowledge just to step in. Labsolutely! is designed to change that by hosting casual, no-pressure info sessions where grad students break down what their lab does and the tools they use—no jargon, no stress, just a simple, digestible intro to different research opportunities on campus. Whether you’re looking to join a lab or just curious about how research works, these sessions will make it easier to explore without feeling overwhelmed.
Digital ID Cards: Ditch the Plastic
Carrying a physical ID card is a bit outdated at this point. Most of us already carry our phones everywhere, so having a digital ID would just make things easier. It’d eliminate the need to dig through your bag or worry about forgetting it in your dorm. Plus, it would streamline things like swiping into buildings, checking into events, and using campus resources. A lot of other schools are already doing it, so why not us?
At the end of the day, I want to bring fresh ideas to USG—ideas that improve student life. If you’re into that, let’s make it happen.
Amal Shaju Parakkadan
Hello, my name is Amal Shaju, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Undergraduate Student Government Senate. As a Senator, I am committed to ensuring that every student has the resources and support necessary to successfully navigate college life and to support a healthy lifestyle for the average college student. My platform focuses on fostering student autonomy, enhancing accessibility to essential life skills, advocating for structured support systems to help first-year students adjust to their newfound independence as well as allocating budget for healthier dining options within the dining halls.
The transition to college marks a significant shift in students' lives, requiring them to balance academics, social life, and daily responsibilities with minimal guidance. Many struggle with time management, financial literacy, and personal organization, all of which impact their academic success and overall well-being. During my freshman year, I found it especially hard to navigate independence, often having to find out, through trial and error, how to handle my finances and understand how to be healthy mentally and physically to keep up with college life and coursework. To address these challenges, I propose the implementation of comprehensive life skills workshops that provide hands-on guidance on essential topics such as budgeting, meal preparation, laundry, and stress management. Unlike traditional freshman orientation programs, these workshops would be interactive and peer-led, ensuring students feel comfortable seeking help and engaging in discussions relevant to their college experience.
Additionally, I will advocate for an anonymous peer-support platform where students can ask questions about college life, from handling coursework to navigating social situations, without fear of judgment. Many students hesitate to seek help due to stigma, and this platform would provide a safe space for open communication.
Ananya madhira
My name is Ananya Madhira. I am a Junior double majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry, with a minor in Bioengineering.
As a dedicated student leader, researcher, and advocate for service, I am running for a Senate position in Stony Brook’s Undergraduate Student Government to ensure that every student’s voice is heard and that we build a campus environment where everyone thrives.
As the President of Phi Delta Epsilon, I have fostered and grown a strong community of aspiring medical professionals, emphasizing mentorship, academic excellence, and service. My leadership has helped shape a fraternity that supports students in both their academic and professional journeys. Beyond academics, I am passionate about giving back. Through my involvement with BEAR and the STEP program, I have worked to support underrepresented high school students interested in STEM and biomedical fields. I will champion policies that promote equity, accessibility, and inclusivity, ensuring that all students, regardless of background, have the resources and support they need to succeed.
Accessibility extends beyond physical spaces—it means ensuring that every student, regardless of background, financial status, or academic discipline, has equitable access to resources, opportunities, and support systems. Whether it is expanding research opportunities, making funding for student organizations more transparent and inclusive, or strengthening mental health and wellness resources, I am committed to advocating for policies that eliminate barriers and ensure every student can fully engage in campus life. Every student should be able to take advantage of the academic, social, and professional development opportunities that Stony Brook has to offer, and USG must play an active role in making that a reality.
Bridging the gap between Campus Lifetime and students’ needs and wants is essential to fostering a vibrant, engaging, and truly reflective campus culture. Too often, there is a disconnect between the events and resources available and what students actually need or value. I will work to strengthen communication between USG, student organizations, and administration to ensure that programming is both accessible and relevant. Campus Lifetime should be a time that fosters meaningful engagement, not just an empty space on the calendar. By advocating for student-driven initiatives, improving event accessibility, and ensuring that commuter students and underrepresented voices are included in planning decisions, we can create a more connected, dynamic, and inclusive campus experience.
If elected, I will work to enhance accessibility, strengthen professional development resources, and advocate for a more connected, supportive student community. I am excited for the opportunity to represent you and turn our shared goals into action.
andrew martin
Hello, Seawolves! My name is Andrew Martin, and I’m excited to run for a seat in the USG Senate. As a sophomore and a transfer student, I bring a fresh perspective and a deep desire to enhance our campus community. My experience on the club hockey team has taught me the importance of teamwork, commitment, and advocacy. I want to carry these values into the senate, ensuring that every voice is heard and every student has the opportunity to thrive.
My fellow students, I understand the challenges we face – whether it’s navigating campus resources, seeking academic support, or finding ways to engage with one another. As your senator, I will prioritize communication between students and administration, making sure your concerns are addressed and that our needs are met. Together, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment.
I am committed to fostering a vibrant campus life by advocating for more events that celebrate our diverse student body, increasing funding for clubs and organizations, and promoting wellness initiatives that support both physical and mental health. Moreover, I want to ensure that all students, especially transfer students like myself, feel at home and connected within our community.
I believe in the power of student leadership and collaboration. With your support, I will work tirelessly to make Stony Brook a place where everyone can shine. Let's come together to make a difference. Vote for Andrew Martin for USG Senate, and let’s create the change we wish to see! Thank you!
Anthony marra
Hello! My name is Anthony Marra, and I am looking forward to announcing my candidacy for the Undergraduate Student Government Senate. I am running because I believe in creating a campus where every student has a voice and where student concerns are addressed properly, backed up by all possible opportunities. It must be the pride of the student community to feel supported by the university in an academic, social, and personal capacity.
My Goals and Priorities:
Improving Campus Resources and Student Life - I will advocate for better academic support services, additional study spaces, and improved campus facilities. I will push for more student-led initiatives, networking opportunities, and career development programs to prepare us for life after graduation.
Transparency and Communication in Student Government - Students deserve to be informed about the decisions that would impact their academics and experiences on campus. I will act on the matter of better communication from Student Government and create better opportunities for students to voice out their concerns before the decision-makers.
Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion - All students must feel they are represented on campus, regardless of who they are. I will support initiatives that advocate for inclusiveness, celebrate diversity, and establish level grounds for all students to prosper.
I am committed to real, meaningful change for all of us. Let us make the campus a better place!
Vote Anthony Marra for Undergraduate Government Senator – Together we can make a difference!
azeem siddiqui
Hey Seawolves!
My name is Azeem Siddiqui, and I’m excited to announce my candidacy for Undergraduate Student Government Senator. I’m currently a second-year student double majoring in Biology and Health Science with a minor in Political Science.
I currently serve on the Student Health Advisory Committee, where I advocate for student health policies and campus wellness initiatives. In addition, I’m a part of the VIP Stem Cell Engineering team, where we are researching methods for skin regeneration for wound care applications. Outside of Stony Brook, I’ve been working as an EMT for about a year and regularly volunteer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where I support chemotherapy patients.
My Vision for Stony Brook
As your USG Senator, I will fight for policies that make student life easier, more affordable, and more connected. Here are some initiatives I plan to introduce:
P.S. I Love You Day x SBU
P.S. I Love You Day is all about spreading kindness, raising awareness for mental health, and preventing suicide. I was introduced to this day in high school, and when I saw how it brought students together, I knew I wanted to bring it to Stony Brook.
Every second Friday in February, schools across Long Island celebrate P.S. I Love You Day by wearing purple to stand up against bullying, support mental health, and show that no one is ever alone. Walking through hallways filled with purple, seeing everyone unite in support, is a powerful reminder of how much we can lift each other up.
I want to make P.S. I Love You Day is an official event at Stony Brook University. This initiative will help create a more supportive, inclusive campus where mental health is prioritized and every student feels valued and connected.
Real-Time Bike and Bus Tracker Apps
Finding a bike on campus shouldn’t be a guessing game. I will work towards creating an app that shows real-time bike availability at each station, making it easier for students to find and use bikes when needed. This will eliminate the frustration of walking to a bike stand and finding no bikes available, providing a more reliable and convenient option for getting around campus. Additionally, I will push for faster development of the new bus tracker app. Although Stony Brook previously had a bus tracker, it was taken down, and the current redevelopment has been too slow.
Expand Echo 360 Access
Access to recorded lectures is essential for academic success. I will push to make it mandatory for all large lectures and classes to record their sessions on Echo360. Additionally, I will work to expand Echo360 access to more classrooms across campus. This initiative will ensure that every student can review lectures on their own time, reinforcing learning and supporting academic achievement.
Introducing Mobile Ordering
Many on-campus retail locations, such as Dunkin’, Popeyes, and Subway, currently lack mobile ordering options, and students are unable to use their rewards on campus. I will work to introduce mobile ordering for these locations, allowing students to skip long lines, redeem their rewards, and pick up food more efficiently.
Expand Value Meals
SAC Food Court currently offers a $7 value meal that includes two slices of pizza, two garlic knots, and a drink. I propose expanding this model to other campus dining locations to provide students with even more budget-friendly options. With food prices already high, I think it is essential that students have access to convenient, quality meals without breaking the bank. I will work with campus dining to broaden the range of affordable options on campus.
Thank you for considering my candidacy. I would be honored to serve as your USG Senator and work to make Stony Brook a better place for all students. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to reach out at azeem.siddiqui@stonybrook.edu.
Go Seawolves!
Beth Portnoy
Hi! I’m Beth Portnoy and it’s not only because I am outspoken, involved, and always ready to care and act that you should elect me as your USG Senator. I promise to vote and act on behalf of a variety of issues - big and small. Some issues are old habits - I single-handedly persuaded administration to change my high school’s budget to provide for free menstrual hygiene products in the restrooms through endless hours spent in administrative offices making sure this cause that I believe must be put into action became a reality. When I came to Stony Brook and saw such a campaign was already in progress, I swore to myself - and now to you - that I will add my wholehearted dedication to this project. Some may say I’m stubborn, but I prefer to call it persistence - because some causes deserve my full attention and dedication, and improving this University to the best of my ability and more is certainly one such cause. I will help organize events more for your enjoyment than my own love of event organization (I already plan events or help do so on behalf of multiple clubs), and also chip in on less glamorous efforts like working to fix the bus system. As a first-generation American, the child of immigrants, I know very well the value of the opportunities I have - including a college education, and I want to maximize that value for all of us. Through campus beautification efforts, especially by increasing the greenery we have and the outdoor gathering spaces for students, we can all get a mental health improvement and a more pleasant experience. I also plan to improve the Stony Brook experience by campaigning for increased campus food access, especially to those with dietary restrictions such as allergies, health and medical requirements, vegans, vegetarians, those with religious limitations such as kosher and halal food and more. We all deserve to get the most learning and results but also enjoyment and resources out of our time here and out education with the greatest ease and the smallest struggle. I may not know about every single possible thing that can help fellow SBU students best succeed, but I swear to keep an open ear. So vote for Beth Portnoy, for someone who will campaign on what we all need and add a fresh breath of air and a new voice to USG. And feel free to shoot me an email with any thoughts or things you think I should address!
Brett Kitograd
I’m Brett Kitograd, and I’m running to be your Undergraduate Senator. In my time in office I’m going to focus on supporting our performance clubs and ensuring fiscal equality based on necessity. As a student, I’ve witnessed the immense dedication and hard work that goes into making our campus vibrant, creative, and full of talent. Performance clubs, from arts to athletics, are the heartbeat of our student community. These clubs not only provide creative outlets but also enrich the campus experience, promote cultural diversity, and help students build lasting relationships.
However, many performance groups struggle with limited resources, inadequate funding, and the constant challenge of balancing their artistic ambitions with financial constraints. As your senator, I will advocate for increased and more equitable funding for all performance clubs, ensuring that every group receives the support it needs to thrive — not just those with the largest membership or most visibility. It’s crucial that funding allocations reflect the actual needs of the clubs, rather than simply their size or popularity. Every performance group, big or small, should have equal opportunities to grow and showcase their talents.
In addition to supporting performance clubs, I believe in a broader commitment to fiscal equality across all student organizations. The current distribution of resources can often leave smaller, underrepresented groups with limited opportunities, while others have an abundance of resources. It’s time for change. I will work towards implementing a transparent, need-based funding system that ensures every group gets the necessary resources to fulfill their missions, without financial inequalities hindering their progress.
I will fight to ensure that the funds we allocate are truly serving the needs of our student body — supporting creativity, innovation, and inclusion across all disciplines. Every club deserves to be seen, heard, and empowered, regardless of their size or budget.
Together, we can create a more equitable and thriving campus for all performance clubs, student organizations, and individuals. If elected, I will be a voice for fairness, creativity, and a better future for all of us.
Carly dunn
Hey Seawolves,
My name is Carly Dunn, and I am a rising Junior majoring in Biomedical Engineering who is eager to be a member of the USG Senate. My leadership experience—most notably as Hall Council President—has strengthened my organizational skills, public speaking abilities, and hands-on approach to problem-solving and decision-making. I also thrive on human interaction and believe deeply in advocacy and collaboration. If elected as your senator, I will remain impartial when discussing and voting on budgetary matters, ensuring that the student body's best interests guide every decision. I will also use my extroverted/social nature to network with administration, participate in subcommittees, and staff large-scale events on our campus. I humbly ask for your support in building a stronger, more student-focused Stony Brook community.
My Initiatives:
1. Campus Transportation & Weather-Related Infrastructure Improvements
- Rentable electric scooters for faster, more convenient on-campus transportation
- Heat lamps/heaters at bus stops to keep students warm during cold weather
- Covered walkways and heated sidewalks/stairs to prevent slips and falls during winter
2. Campus Dining Improvements
- Hard serve ice cream flavors at Carvel in East Side Dining
- More fruit options at dining locations, as well as water infused with real fruits
- Return “Late Night” to the Nutrislice app, so that students can see what food options are available after 10:00 pm
3. Campus Facilities & Amenities Improvements
- Gift card usage at non-retail stores such as Subway, Dunkin, and Peet’s Coffee
- Vending machines to accept dining dollars, expanding students’ payment options beyond cash or credit
- Fixing and upgrading power outlets around campus for reliable device charging
4. Campus Health, Safety, & Sanitation Improvements
- Student Health Services open on weekends to accommodate students’ schedules and potential medical needs outside of weekdays
- Clearing vent blockage and sewage drain backup in dorm bathrooms
- Paper towel dispensers placed alongside existing automatic hand dryers in dorm bathrooms
Lucas Puccia
My name is Lucas Puccia, and I will be running for a Senate position in the Undergraduate Student Government because I believe in student representation to create real change on campus. As a dedicated accounting student and an active member of our Stony Brook community, I want to ensure that our voices are heard, our concerns are addressed, and our experience here is the best it can be.
As an Accounting student, I understand the importance of responsible budgeting and financial oversight. I will push for greater transparency in USG's spending, ensuring student funds are allocated efficiently and effectively to enhance our campus experience. Students deserve to know where their money is going, and I will work to make that information more accessible through detailed financial reports and open discussions.
I will advocate for expanded tutoring resources, more networking opportunities, and stronger partnerships with alumni and local businesses to help students gain real-world experience and career readiness. From club funding to campus events, I will work to ensure that student organizations have the resources they need to thrive. I also want to push for more social and professional events that bring students together, fostering a stronger sense of community and belonging.
Additionally, I believe students deserve a direct line of communication with USG. I will work to establish more open forums and surveys so that your concerns are heard and addressed promptly.
I’m ready to bring real accountability, engagement, and positive change to our student government. Let’s make our voices count. Vote Lucas Puccia for USG Senate!
cooper smith
My name is Cooper Smith and I am running for Senate in the Undergraduate Student Government at Stony Brook University. As a dedicated member of the community, I have fallen in love with this institution and will do anything I can to foster a more inclusive, transparent, and student-focused campus.
The USG Senate serves as the legislative body representing the voices of all students, and I believe it is our duty to ensure that every student is heard, valued, and empowered. If elected, I will advocate for policies that prioritize student welfare, financial responsibility, and academic excellence while ensuring the fair allocation of student activity funds in accordance with the USG Constitution. I am committed to promoting financial transparency and accountability, ensuring that student funds are distributed efficiently to enhance student life and provide equitable access to resources. I will work to strengthen collaboration between USG, student organizations, and university administration to foster a more vibrant and engaged campus. Additionally, I will advocate for policies that address academic concerns, mental health resources, and student rights, ensuring that university policies align with student needs. Above all, I will work to uphold inclusivity and equal representation, creating an environment where all students feel empowered and supported.
By working collaboratively with my fellow senators, student leaders, and university officials, I aim to foster an engaged, dynamic, and responsive student government that truly reflects the needs of the Stony Brook undergraduate community. Your support will allow me to bring meaningful change, and I look forward to the opportunity to serve you.
christina wong
Salutations! I'm Christina, and it's wonderful to meet you! :)
I love getting to know people, exploring the world across countries and disciplines, and cracking (bad) dad jokes in every situation I find myself in, so please feel free to reach out to me at christina.wong@stonybrook.edu! ^~^
I'm a sophomore cross-posted under CEAS, SoMAS, and CAS, with a double major in Political Science and Sustainability Studies and a Korean Studies minor. I’m interested in running for senate to:
1) Foster community sentiment on the club and university level by collaborating with clubs and departments across campus
2) Connect, create, and introduce students with resources including but not limited to career and professional development, mental health, academics, extracurriculars, studying abroad, etc.
3) Acquire the opportunity to serve as a voice for students regarding advising and university services
My personal story is that as a first-generation college student, I struggled a lot with the tough transition from attending a small high school to enrolling in a large university, so I immersed myself in various partitions of the university; from matriculating as a direct-admit, Biomedical Engineering (CEAS) student—who simultaneously delved into financial literacy research efforts in the College of Business (CoB)—to meeting many friends in the School of Communications and Journalism (SocJ) as I made degree progress underneath majors in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), I’ve applied a multidisciplinary approach since I began my undergraduate career.
The greatest wonder that has ensued from my curiosity-driven traversal of the university has been getting to realize that although disciplines across majors and minors tend to vary, the fundamentals of knowing how to ask questions in our daily lives and research are pivotal to making progress wherever we go.
"In both my research career—where I’ve gained experience with the VIP Soft Flyers mechanical engineering team and as a research assistant in the Political Science Department—and in my daily interactions, I often ask myself, “What can I do in this situation, given the constraints and variability of the data at hand?”
Applied to the extracurricular level where I served as the Secretary of the Robotics Team at Stony Brook (SBRT) and as a current member of the CAS Dean’s Student Advisory Council (DSAC), I’m a flexible, inclusive thinker who can offer swift and accurate solutions in each and every circumstance that arises. Over the course of my freshman and sophomore years, I’ve managed demographic data (i.e. major, year, minor, food restrictions, etc.) related to events and conducted event planning and execution for small and large-scale events, contributed student feedback directly to CAS regarding university services, and studied abroad in South Korea.
I love how every single opportunity I’ve gotten has enabled me to interact and work together with students and people from diverse disciplines and origins, broadened my perspective in unique socio-economic challenges and accessibility barriers, and continued to fuel the flames of my dedication to public service.
DOORVA GARG
Hey Seawolves!
My name is Doorva Garg and I am thrilled to be rerunning for USG Senate! I am a Biomedical Engineering major in the University Scholars program and am passionate about making our campus a more connected, inclusive, and vibrant place for everyone.
Through my leadership roles in various clubs, I have successfully planned and executed large-scale community events, and I’m eager to continue making an impact at Stony Brook. As an out of state student, I’ve especially realized how important these events are in fostering a sense of community and belonging on campus. I’ve loved campus traditions like Wolfieland and Light the Brook, and I’m excited to work behind the scenes to make them even better for you!
Beyond campus, I have served on local and national committees to promote educational accessibility and have been recognized at the state and national level for my commitment to STEM outreach and advocacy through NCWIT and Million Women Mentors. I will bring this same dedication to amplifying student voices and advocating for a more inclusive, resourceful campus as your senator.
Additionally, I have experience securing funding for organizations, carefully managing budgets, and making informed financial decisions while working within administrative guidelines—skills that will allow me to advocate for responsible resource allocation in USG. Serving on judging committees for competitions I’ve helped run has also strengthened my ability to make fair, unbiased decisions—an essential quality for a senator.
As a current USG Senator, I’ve had the privilege of serving on the University Affairs Committee, where I’ve worked on initiatives to enhance student life. Next year, I hope to continue making an impact by focusing on:
Extending Peet’s Coffee Hours: While studying at the DeVries Center, many students have shared their frustrations about the limited evening/late-night snacks and drink options on the west side of campus. While Dunkin’ and Starbucks serve students on the East side, extending Peet’s Coffee hours would provide a much-needed spot for late-night caffeine runs, study breaks, and warm winter treats for students on West. This initiative would enhance DeVries as a hub for socializing, studying, and re-energizing between classes or late-night sessions. Additionally, I’d like to advocate for adding more functional tables upstairs, ensuring students have ample space to study comfortably. Extending its hours, especially on weekends and during finals, would greatly benefit students who spend long hours studying in their dorms. This would also create more on-campus employment opportunities for students, particularly for those living on West Campus who may prefer jobs that are close to their dorms.
Improving Club Resources and Storage: As a member of the dance team SBU Raaswalas, I’ve seen firsthand the storage challenges student organizations face. Our team constructs intricate props for competitions, yet we lack designated storage space, forcing members to store materials in their dorms. This is inconvenient not only for the person storing but also the rest of the team since it makes it difficult for them to access the shared resources. The issue becomes even more complicated when the resources are spread out across multiple dorms across campus or stored by commuters who may even have to take them home. To address this, I will advocate for the creation of shared storage lockers on campus for student organizations with large equipment or props. This will provide a secure, centralized location, reducing the burden on individual members and improving organization for all clubs.
Enhancing Campus Decor & Atmosphere: “Look good, feel good,” they say. Some areas of campus, particularly residential zones, can feel dull—especially in winter. The lights near the Admin building already create a lively atmosphere, and I want to extend this effort to other areas with simple but effective decor, like string lights and seasonal displays, to make campus feel more welcoming and vibrant year-round.
More than anything, I want to hear from YOU. Whether it’s tackling student concerns, improving campus resources, or just making Stony Brook a more exciting place to be, I’m here to listen, collaborate, and take action. Feel free to reach out to me at doorva.garg@stonybrook.edu or on Instagram @doorvagarg.
I would be honored to have your vote and to represent you in the USG Senate.
Thank you!

EMELIO HARRIS
My name is Emelio Harris, and I’m a proud freshman at Stony Brook University, as well as a dedicated member of the Senate. During my time in Senate, I've worked relentlessly to uncover and expand access to the resources available on campus, ensuring that every student can take full advantage of what Stony Brook has to offer.
I am running for re-election because I believe there is still so much more we can do to improve student life at Stony Brook. I’m committed to tackling the issues of miscommunication and inaccessible resources, which often stand in the way of students' success. Alongside fellow senators, I am actively working to unify campus resources and ensure every student’s rights are clearly defined and respected.
The role of a senator is to solve the challenges our student body faces within our power, and that’s exactly what I plan to continue doing. With your support, I will keep pushing for a more accessible, convenient, and unified experience for all students at Stony Brook.
Ethan Rothburd
My name is Ethan Rothburd, and I am running for Senator of USG. I’m a junior at Stony Brook University, double majoring in Applied Mathematics & Statistics and Economics. Prior to enrolling at Stony Brook last fall, I earned my associate’s degree at Suffolk County Community College. Throughout my time at SCCC, I was involved in their Student Government Association (SGA), serving in multiple roles ranging from Senator to committee chair to Vice President and then President during the 2023-2024 academic year. This prior experience with college student government makes me a prime candidate for Senator.
As President of SCCC Student Government Association (SGA), my duties included but were not limited to: presiding over all organizational meetings, activities, budgets, and representations. It was my role to be the external and internal face of SGA, representing our interests in meetings with the college President and administrators throughout the college’s network.
My tenure as President began with struggling membership – no more than around 10 members. In less than one year, we grew SGA into a robust and active organization with nearly 50 members - the largest in the organization’s history. Managing an organization engaged in such dramatic growth and ensuring both its current and future success was a welcome and exciting challenge, requiring that I make tough decisions when needed, delegate tasks to team members appropriately, and outline clear objectives for our organization and its sponsors..
Our SGA recorded several significant accomplishments, including the successful implementation of the Halal Hut, a new food vendor established as a result of a campus-wide survey, and substantial advancement of implementation of a college-wide course evaluation system (modeled largely on Stony Brook’s ClassieEvals), the data from which would provide students with greater resources and information when choosing their classes while also giving professors valuable feedback. There were also numerous quality-of-life student issues that we successfully addressed, such as campus lighting and Wi-Fi issues. Whether it is advocacy, budget allocation, event programming, or the various other functions of student government, I have experienced a great deal of the dynamics involved and skills utilized in the role of a student government official.
Outside of school, I interned for Congressman Nick LaLota (NY1), as well as for Suffolk County Legislator Anthony Piccirillo (S-8), where I gained valuable administrative experience and constituency skills associated with serving as Senator of USG.
As Senator, I plan to use my prior experience to continue and enhance the working relationship between students and administration, making sure we are representing undergraduates to the best of our ability. My goal is to put your interests as a student first while taking the necessary action to advance those interests. We will create an environment that fosters student welfare, engagement, and success above all.
It is my vision for USG to be the eyes, ears, and voice of the student body. Together, we will maximize your college experience, and create a better Stony Brook.
FAIYAZ ISLAM
Hey Seawolves!
USG is failing undergraduate students. Clubs are left in the dark, budgets are mismanaged, and student voices are being ignored. It's time for change.
My name is Faiyaz Islam, and I’m a freshman majoring in Biology . I am running to be a Senator of Stony Brook University’s Undergraduate Student Government as a member of the Seawolves Forward Party.
Right now, USG is failing in two major areas:
Lack of Communication & Transparency with Clubs:
Many clubs have been left in the dark about important updates affecting everything from their budgets to daily operations. Sometimes, an email is not enough to inform our hundreds of clubs about important updates. As President, I will:
• Establish a direct line of communication between club leaders and USG.
• Work closely with clubs to resolve administrative issues.
• Inform clubs in advance about USG operations legislative changes that affect them.
Inefficient Management of the USG Budget
Despite USG’s large budget, many clubs have faced unnecessary and unfair cuts to their budgets. At the same time, we have seen USG spend money on things that don’t positively benefit the undergraduate student body. As President, I will:
• Use the USG website and Instagram to publicize where every dollar from the Student Activity Fee gets spent.
• Eliminate unnecessary spending that diminishes the budget each year.
• Remove restrictive funding caps that prevent clubs from requesting funding for their needs.
We deserve a USG that promotes the interests of our students and clubs. With your vote, we can fix the problems that USG has been facing for years. Together, we will put students first, empower our clubs, and reduce wasteful spending.
garett simpson
I’ve lived all around the country and attended three different high schools, which means I’ve experienced what it’s like to constantly adapt to new environments, meet new people, and navigate all kinds of challenges. These experiences taught me how to connect with people from all walks of life, listen to different perspectives, and find ways to bring people together. This adaptability and openness have shaped who I am and drive my passion for creating meaningful change in the communities I’m a part of.
Coming to Stony Brook felt like a fresh start, but also an opportunity to put everything I’ve learned into action. I understand how important it is to feel like you belong, to have your voice heard, and to have access to the resources you need to succeed. These aren’t just abstract goals—they are essential to thriving as a student. My focus as a senator will be on addressing the real, everyday issues that impact us all.
One of my priorities is improving access to resources that make life at Stony Brook better for everyone. This includes advocating for better housing options, ensuring affordability, and addressing availability so that students don’t have to worry about where they’ll live. I also want to push for expanded mental health services, including shorter wait times and more accessible counseling options, because mental health should always be a priority.
Additionally, I am passionate about celebrating the diversity that makes Stony Brook such a unique place. Supporting programs and initiatives that foster inclusivity, cultural exchange, and community-building will ensure that everyone feels valued and represented.
As a senator, I will bring my ability to listen, collaborate, and act to address the challenges we face as a student body. I believe that by working together and being open to all perspectives, we can create solutions that truly make a difference. With your support, we can build a stronger, more connected Stony Brook community.
Gatik Yadav
Hey Seawolves!
I’m Gatik Yadav, and I’m excited to be running for USG Senator for the 2025-26 term! As a sophomore studying Computer Science and Applied Math & Stats, I know what it’s like to balance academics, campus life, and everything in between. Through my work at the campus recreation center and as an intramural referee, I’ve met students from all over campus who rely on our campus spaces for fitness, fun, and community. Plus, after shadowing USG University Affairs (UA) meetings and helping plan USG events, I’ve seen firsthand how student government can create real, positive change.
At the end of the day, we’re all just looking for ways to make student life smoother and more enjoyable. Whether it’s grabbing a quick snack after a workout, using Dining Dollars where it actually makes sense, or having the right equipment to play outdoor sports, these little things add up and impact our experience. That’s why my platform is focused on four key initiatives that will directly benefit students:
1. Dining Dollars Should Work at Vending Machines
We all have Dining Dollars, but most of us can’t even use them where we actually need to. Right now, vending machines only take cash, credit, or debit, forcing students to spend out-of-pocket money when they already have Dining Dollars available.
I’ll push to make Dining Dollars usable at vending machines, so:
> More students can actually use them when they need them instead of rushing at the end of the semester to spend them before they expire
> Vending machines become a reliable, 24/7 option
> Less out-of-pocket spending for quick snacks and drinks
This is a simple fix that would make life easier for every student on campus.
2. Better Vending Machine Options in the Rec Center
The Rec Center is one of the most visited spots on campus, but finding a convenient, healthy snack there isn’t easy. Students shouldn’t have to leave the facility just to grab a protein shake or an energy boost—those options should be right there, where we need them.
If elected, I’ll push for Rec Center Lobby vending machines to stock:
> Protein shakes & bars for muscle recovery
> Energy drinks & coffee/pre-workout for a quick boost
> Healthier snack alternatives to keep you fueled
This would make it easier and more convenient to stay energized and focused without disrupting your routine.
3. Rentable Sports Equipment for Outdoor Spaces in Residential Communities
We have great outdoor courts in residence communities, but they’re not used enough because students don’t have equipment. Right now, residence halls only rent out indoor game gear like pool sticks and ping pong paddles. But what about basketballs, volleyballs, and spikeball kits?
I’ll push for residence halls to offer rentable outdoor sports equipment, including:
> Basketballs for courts at H-Community, West Apartments, and Tabler
> Volleyballs for sand and court volleyball games in Roth & H-Community
> Spikeball kits for open spaces and grassy areas
> Other high-demand equipment based on student feedback
This would help more students get outside, stay active, and connect with others, making campus feel more like home.
4. Virtual Student IDs for Easier Access
Many universities have already implemented virtual student IDs that work with Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, making it easier, faster, and more secure to access campus buildings, dining halls, and events. Why don’t we have this yet?
If elected, I’ll advocate for:
> Virtual Student IDs that work alongside physical cards, giving students a convenient digital option
> Integration with Apple Wallet & Google Wallet, eliminating the need to carry a physical ID all the time
> Faster, more secure access to campus buildings, meal swipes, and events
This would modernize campus access, making student life more efficient and hassle-free.
Why Vote for Me?
I know what it’s like to be a student trying to make the most of campus life, and I’m running for real, practical changes that will benefit us. With my experience in campus recreation, USG meetings, and event planning, I understand both what students want and how to make it happen.
These ideas are achievable, realistic, and will improve student life in meaningful ways. If elected, I’ll work with students, USG, and administration to make sure our needs are prioritized and acted on.
Let this Senator make campus more accessible, convenient, and student-friendly—together.
Heath Goldsmith
My name is Heath Goldsmith and I am running for Senate of Undergraduate Student Government. As a political science major, I have a unique ability to listen to varying perspectives and have learned that diversity makes us stronger. I would like to create a more lively and engaged on-campus life and would emphasize the importance of equity. I would ensure that everything I do is just and I would represent all of the needs and wants of my fellow students to the best of my ability. I am running to ensure that the students of Stony Brook University are heard and that communication between students and members of USG is clear. I think that I have the ability to create a welcoming and honest relationship between students and USG.
To me, transparency is crucial to success so I would be open and honest about every decision that is made within USG. Diversity is extremely important to me which is why if I am elected to the senate, I will consider everyone’s point of view and differing opinions when making decisions that impact the students of Stony Brook University. I will weigh the needs and wants of all who USG serves. I will listen to all student concerns and will make appropriate and fair decisions in turn. I will distribute funds reasonably and equitably and take all students' needs and wants into consideration with full transparency. I intend to communicate thoroughly with all other members of USG as well as the students of our outstanding university.
Overall, I plan to bring positive change, inclusivity, transparency, and fairness to USG. I intend to advocate for my fellow students with honesty and understanding. Students deserve to have their voices heard and know where their money is going and I intend on ensuring that. I will welcome questions and will work towards having monthly meetings between members of USG and students where those questions can be answered. It would be an honor to be elected to serve my fellow undergraduate students on the USG senate.
Hudson DiNapoli
Dear Stony Brook Students,
My name is Hudson DiNapoli, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Undergraduate Student Government Senate. As a Business Management major specializing in Finance and Investment, I am eager to bring my leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills to represent and advocate for our student body.
As Vice President of the Stony Brook University Finance Society, I have successfully organized events, fostered student engagement, and worked collaboratively to create opportunities for my peers. My involvement in the Investment Club has further strengthened my ability to think critically, analyze complex issues, and develop strategic solutions—skills essential for making informed decisions as a USG Senator.
My goal is to help create more equity within the student government and ensure that club budgets are allocated fairly based on financial needs. Many student organizations play a vital role in our campus experience, and I want to help streamline the budgeting process to support clubs that foster leadership, community, and student engagement. By advocating for financial transparency and efficient resource distribution, I will work to ensure that every student organization has the opportunity to thrive.
If elected, I will focus on increasing transparency within USG, advocating for better student resources, and enhancing student engagement across campus. I am committed to making USG a more inclusive and financially responsible body that truly serves the needs of all students.
I would be honored to serve as your senator and to be a voice for positive change at Stony Brook. Thank you for your support!
Hudson DiNapoli
Isabella Mehmel
Hello!
My name is Isabella Mehmel, and I am thrilled to be a candidate for the senator position in the Undergraduate Student Government. As a fellow undergraduate student, I find it essential to understand the perspectives of fellow students, and I am committed to not letting your voice go unheard.
I am a sophomore currently majoring in Mathematics, and minoring in Chemistry, and I’m on the pre-medical track. Being surrounded by math and science-based classes, you can’t escape numbers. Even on campus, I sometimes catch myself thinking in numbers: the number of credits I’m taking, my number of grades in every class, and unfortunately the low number of hours of sleep I get because of this. Emphasizing numbers, Stony Brook is the #1 SUNY university, and there are over 350 clubs and organizations. Our undergraduate student body is growing each semester, with up to 17,500 students right now.
Numbers usually quantify growth, and oftentimes be limited to a statistic, just as I exemplified in the previous sentence. But I’m here to tell you: numbers cannot quantify the student experience. Each and every 17,500 of you is uniquely special, remarkable, and important to this university. And to me.
These numbers cannot tell you the dreams and desires of each student. As senator, I want to focus on making the campus more lively and a more comfortable educational space for all students. Although that may not be reflected in our yearly statistics, your experience and happiness are way more valuable to me.
My platform is focused on the following initiatives that I will advocate to implement:
Sleeping pods around campus for commuters
Sleeping in the car is extremely uncomfortable (trust me, I know), but students should have access to more places to sleep instead of their car or that weirdly long couch found in the music library. It is easier for students who live on campus to go back to their dorm to take a nap and go right back to class, but commuters can live up to an hour away from campus and a majority of them use their car. Even for those who use the train, there is nowhere for them to recharge before conquering the rest of their day. Implementing these sleeping pods in common spaces can make it a more comfortable and private area for students to relax for a bit and even catch a quick nap.
❁ Flower Garden ❁ !
Let’s be real, there are so many good study spots on campus, but they are all illuminated with sad dim lighting. The implementation of a flower garden throughout the study spots can bring life and joy to these students who will study in the same spot the entire day. It shows that there is more to life than just grades, as we are all people trying to get through school. We often get lost in our studies and don’t focus on our mental health, but even just seeing a little garden will open light to students that they need to take a break from staring at black and white on their computer or on pieces of paper.
More outlets around campus!
Have you ever been in the SAC fishbowl (the area of the SAC with windows surrounding it) with a dead computer? It’s a terrible feeling when all you want to do is soak up the little bit of sunlight there has been. Everywhere you go on campus is packed with students studying for their upcoming midterms but this area is the one place to escape. With easy access to food options, it is a great place to get a little studying done in between classes. With the inclusion of outlets throughout, it is easier for students to stay here for longer periods of time and even later at night for their study sessions. I’m sure there’s other areas around school that are similarly lacking in outlets (like the physics library which should also have longer hours), so let me know!
You’re probably thinking: what makes this girl qualified? I’ve shown you why I would love to be your senator– let me express why I think I deserve it as well.
I am on the Executive Board of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA). As a relatively new club, we advocate for women in healthcare and I ensure this is done in every event we conduct. Currently, I am the treasurer and just recently, I have successfully converted our budget from the PBC (probationary budget) to the Line Budget for the upcoming semesters. The passion and enthusiasm that was demonstrated in our club gaining this budget is reflected in all the work I do, and I want to direct my ambition towards larger initiatives.
I won’t stop at just this club, I will advocate for every student and other clubs to ensure equity representation throughout. I know what it’s like to be a smaller club on campus, feeling like your voice doesn’t matter– but I’m here to tell you it does, and it can be heard. Let me be that advocate for you and your club, by voting me for Senator. Let me advocate for your fully charged laptop, your desire to relax after a long day, and to remain happy during your studies as you deserve. My initiatives won’t be measured through the statistics they render, but through how well they benefit students like you.
Thank you for listening to me, and I’m looking forward to working with you all,
Isabella.
Jade Carr
Hello, Seawolves!
My name is Jade Carr, I am a Sophomore majoring in political science on the Pre-Law track and minoring in Globalization and international studies.
I am running for the At-Large Senator position in the Undergraduate Student Government (USG).
As an aspiring attorney, I’m passionate about advocacy, fairness, and creating real impact. I believe every student deserves to have their voice heard and their concerns represented. I embrace human interaction and open communication, valuing the connections that make our community stronger. I’m committed to bridging the gap between USG and the student body, ensuring leadership is transparent, accessible, and truly works for everyone.
With this in mind, I am running for USG senator to ensure every student feels heard, supported, and represented. My platform centers these four key objectives: advocating for commuter students, improving support for student organizations, prioritizing mental health resources, and working toward a more inclusive and transparent USG.
1. Advocating for Commuter Students
As a commuter student myself, I understand the unique challenges we face. That's why I am committed to ensuring that commuter students are fully integrated into campus life. I will advocate for practical solutions like improved parking, increased food warm-up stations, and greater access to campus resources. Additionally, I propose creating more commuter focused events and engagement opportunities to help strengthen our connection to the university community and make us feel truly included.
2. Supporting Student Organizations
Student organizations are crucial to campus life, yet many club leaders face delays in communication with USG, hindering their ability to plan and execute events. I will streamline communication and ensure timely support for clubs. Additionally, I will increase awareness of available funding opportunities, ensuring that student organizations can take full advantage of the resources offered to them. By improving access to funding and support, I aim to empower clubs to thrive and contribute more effectively to our campus community.
To achieve this, I propose establishing a direct channel between USG and student organizations, such as a dedicated platform and regular office hours for club leaders. I will also increase awareness of available funding opportunities through workshops and a centralized online resource that provides clear information on application processes and deadlines. To support event planning, step-by-step guides and training sessions to simplify the process for clubs. Additionally, I will encourage collaboration by creating a space for clubs to connect, share ideas, and work together, creating a more inclusive and connected campus community.
3. Promoting Transparency and Accountability
I am committed to creating a transparent and accountable USG that actively listens to student concerns and addresses them fairly. This includes following the bylaws to ensure all actions and decisions align with established guidelines. I will be open about the budgeting process and ensure that all funding decisions are clear, unbiased, and adhere to proper procedures. By prioritizing transparency in fund allocation and grant opportunities, I will provide detailed breakdowns and ensure equitable access for all student organizations. Through honesty, adherence to bylaws, and open communication, I will build trust and support a fair, thriving campus community.
4. Expanding Mental Health Support
University life is demanding, and while we focus on academics and career goals, we must also prioritize mental health. To support students, I propose implementing an online chat-based mental health service, similar to platforms like Therapist Chat or 7 Cups, which provide real-time, anonymous text-based support. These services have been successful at other universities, offering students an easy and discreet way to access help, especially for those who are uncomfortable with face-to-face sessions.
To achieve this, I will advocate for the introduction of an online chat service within our mental health offerings, working with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to explore implementation. Additionally, I’ll collaborate with the Career Center to integrate mental wellness into career preparation by hosting workshops on stress management and balancing academic pressures. This approach will ensure students receive the support they need to thrive, both academically and mentally.
Thank you for considering me as your senator. I am eager to serve you and work toward making our campus a more inclusive, supportive, and thriving community for all students. If you have any questions or ideas, please do not hesitate to contact me at Jade.Carr@stonybrook.edu. Together, we can create a space where every student is heard, valued, and empowered to succeed.
Open Minds, Shared Struggles, Collective Success!
Justin Nakagawa
I, Justin Nakagawa, am deeply committed to actively listening to your concerns and working together. I aim to improve student resources, advocate for mental health, and create a sense of community. My goal is to utilize my studies as a Business Management major to ensure our government is fiscally responsible with our Student Activity Fee to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. I will strive to innovate solutions that minimize stress for clubs, allowing members to focus more on their events and less on their budgets. I aim to leave Stony Brook a better community than when I enrolled, and I am looking for your support. Your vote matters!
Kaylen James
Hi! My name is Kaylen James (she/her). I’ve had the pleasure of being a senator last year, and I hope to become one again this year. I’m a rising junior majoring in Biology with a minor in Health, Medicine & Society. I have a strong interest in pursuing an MD/Ph.D.(a degree that combines medical training and research). I am running to become a Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senator for the 2025-2026 school year. I want to serve in the USG Senate to advocate for and discuss topics that are impacting everyone. Also, be able to create alternative solutions that are in everyone's best interests.
My Main Objective is to:
Build a better connection between USG and the Student body
I believe a lot of people are unaware of the role and significance of the USG.
They don’t know that USG is here FOR them, and that they should feel comfortable enough to speak up on any issues they are facing or see that need to be addressed. Encouraging our student body to have a closer personal relationship with the USG is my goal. In order to achieve this, I want to arrange town hall meetings for each undergraduate year so that students may interact and communicate with us about how we can improve their undergraduate experience at Stony Brook and ensure that any idea or issue brought to USG will be valued.
Below are some of the initiatives I will propose if elected as Senator:
Room for Undergraduate Student to Share their Voices & Concerns
A few times out of the year USG could host events that allow for the students to address their concerns. Students will be able to express what can be changed or implemented here at Stony Brooklyn through this initiative, which will make their experience better.
Enhance Internship Opportunities
A website would be created solely for students seeking internship opportunities. Depending on the student’s interests, the website would list current opportunities and let them network with those who have already participated in the options. They would be able to discuss and offer guidance, an overview of the experience, and give recommendations to those considering.
Events that encourage “Adulting” and instill Life Lessons
Every two months the student body should vote to select an event that focuses on various topics like time management, cooking, budgeting/finances, self-love, and fitness. These classes would be beneficial towards helping us be more independent. With access to these classes, the student body can learn insightful lessons, and ways of making being independent a little bit easier by hearing from adults who have gone through similar struggles.
Kylie Barkei
My name is Kylie Barkei, and I am running for the USG At-Large Senator. I am currently a freshman, majoring in Political Science on the Pre-Law track.
Through my involvement in the Japanese Student Organization and Leading Women of Tomorrow at Stony Brook University, I have gained a deep understanding of diverse perspectives, and I am committed to advocating for student causes on campus.
Initiatives
Resources for Out-of-State and International Students
As an out-of-state student and someone who has spent over half my life overseas, I understand the difficulties of finding a sense of belonging in a new community. I plan to work with USG to establish programs and open forums that students can utilize to share their experiences and access resources that ease their transition. By establishing mentorship or buddy programs that connect out-of-state and international students with upperclassmen who can offer advice and guidance, I aim to help make sure that out-of-state and international students feel supported, informed, and empowered throughout their time on campus.
Ensure that the TEDxSBU Conference returns
I know many of our students would like to bring back the TEDxSBU Talks, so as a senator, I want to ensure that this event returns. With my previous experience of co-organizing a TEDx Conference at The American School in Japan, I am confident in my ability to put the most effort towards bringing back the conference. I believe this event can uplift the voices of our diverse population of students and foster a sense of community on campus. In addition, featuring Stony Brook University students on the official TED platform will benefit our institution as a whole. I will work diligently to communicate and arrange the necessary means to make
Expanding the Menstrual Hygiene Program
One of USG’s programs that really stood out to me was the Menstrual Hygiene Program (MHP), as ensuring access to menstrual products is crucial to a large part of our student body. As an At-Large Senator, I would like to work on expanding the committee to involve more student voices. By collaborating with gender-equality, health advocacy, and sustainability organizations on campus, it would allow for the program to continue to meet the needs of our entire student body. I would also like to expand the dispenser locations to areas such as the communal bathrooms in the dorms on campus or to more of the academic buildings on campus.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration. As an At-Large Senator, I will strive to accomplish these initiatives and work with the rest of the Undergraduate Student Government to advocate for other impactful policies as well. Please feel free to reach out to me through email at kylie.barkei@stonybrook.edu or my socials @kyliebarkei
Lauren Fanter
I’m Lauren, and I’m a sophomore majoring in Applied Math and Economics. For the past year I’ve been a senator and I’m looking to run for a second term! As senator this year I have been a part of the Legislative and Vetting committee, where I helped write most of resolution passed to increase the ability of clubs to receive grants, alongside dedicating my time to be an occasional member of the second Budget Grant Committee which meets to help decrease the time it takes for clubs to receive their grants. I have also participated in the planning and execution of USG events.
Next year if I get elected I would like to:
- Work on increasing the longevity of the Grant pool so that it doesn’t run out so fast and more clubs, especially those with competitive competitions they need to qualify for and can’t plan far in advance, can be able to benefit from grants.
Increase the student reach of the student activity fee, making sure more people on campus are able to benefit from the student activity fee they pay in to.
- Work to promote USG funded club events greater on campus, helping clubs reach their maximum audience.
- Advocate for improvements to parking on campus, including making resident parking free again and keeping the costs of commuting parking as low as possible and accessible.
- Advocate for improvements to bus transportation, including making more accessible transportation off campus to shopping areas, opposed to the once a week shopping route we have, and ensuring the new live bus tracking implemented will be accurate and efficient for student use.
- Implement more large scale school-wide events to better connect our community on campus, including making these events commuter-accessible.
- Implement better mentorship programs on campus, helping freshmen and new transfer students better adjust to university life at Stony Brook.
Advocate for more affordable food prices on campus.
And last but more important, I want to help create initiatives that represent what students want to improve on campus! I’m an open ear and I want to hear your opinions on how campus-life and USG could improve!
Thank you so much!
Maisha Rahman
My name is Maisha Rahman, and I am a third-year student majoring in Biology with a double minor in Health, Medicine, and Society and South Asian Studies.
Since Fall 2024, I have been actively working with the Undergraduate Council Senate Committee on policy changes that directly impact your academic experience, including the course retake policy. I aim to advocate for designated seats for students retaking high-demand core courses, ensuring they can progress to upper-division classes without delay. Additionally, I am committed to streamlining course evaluations and updating technology requirements to better support your learning needs.
One of my primary goals is to provide more dining options for people with religious needs by standardizing halal and kosher food across campus. To support commuters, I propose increased microwave access in high-foot-traffic areas such as the SBU Union, Roth Cafe, and the Commuter Lounge in Melville Library.
I also want to empower student organizations by expanding club funding opportunities, including more grants for new clubs and clubs without existing funding. This will allow organizations with high student engagement to host events without financial constraints.
To bridge the gap between students and their representatives, I propose establishing a questions, comments, and suggestions inbox on the USG Instagram account, along with a physical mailbox at the SAC. Additionally, I aim to introduce Senate drop-in office hours where students can directly voice their concerns and ideas to their representatives. This initiative would enhance transparency and ensure students feel heard and included in campus decision-making.
Regarding academic advising, I believe in increasing pre-professional advising. I also propose introducing financial literacy courses similar to SBU 101/102, covering essential topics like budgeting, investing, cost of living, and loans to better prepare students for life post graduation.
I would love to implement a Faculty Lecture Series where professors share previews of their courses. Students could explore new subjects and get to know potential professors before enrolling in their classes. I am currently working on this initiative as part of my internship at the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies, and I hope to expand this idea into a campus-wide program.
My experiences as a representative of the Undergraduate Council Senate Committee, an Intern at the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies, and Manager of Operations for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society have equipped me with the leadership, communication, and advocacy skills necessary to represent you effectively. I am dedicated to fostering an inclusive community that uplifts every voice and enhances the student experience.
I am committed to listening to your concerns, advocating for your needs, and working tirelessly to make Stony Brook a place where every student can thrive and feel at home. If you have any questions, suggestions, or ideas, please feel free to contact me at maisha.rahman.1@stonybrook.edu.
Maryam Elfeky
Lasting and positive change never happens by chance. It takes passionate people from different backgrounds, consistently advocating for student-led solutions. My name is Maryam Elfeky, and as a leader at SBU, it would be an honor to serve as your Senator in the Undergraduate Student Government to ensure that your voices are heard and faithfully enacted (USG).
I am a sophomore double majoring in Political Science and Communication with a minor in Biology, and extensive involvement in our vibrant campus community through various organizations and leadership positions. Prior to my decision to run for USG Senate, I sat in on several Senate meetings to understand the inner workings of USG as well as the unique challenges that come with the position.
My passion for advocacy and policy-making is lifelong and I have been actively engaged in activism and policy work since high school. My engagement as a club leader, a Resident Assistant, an Area Office Assistant, a Teaching Assistant, and an advocate for student-driven initiatives, among other positions, allows me to truly understand the diverse needs of our student body in order to advocate for change. I have personally experienced the unique challenges students at SBU face and, as a result, I have many changes I would like to see executed to improve the Seawolf experience as your Senator. I plan to focus on key issues affecting our undergraduate student body including campus living conditions including floods, meal plans with ASA, improving campus resources, addressing unfair fees, and career mentorship for our growing diverse disciplines by developing and lobbying legislation.
Meaningful change starts with empathetic listening and I will personally seek out students' input on what changes they want to see at SBU and work to bring those ideas to life to strengthen our campus community. I would be honored to earn your support and serve as your voice in USG!
Maryam Elfeky
Matthew Edward Barnes
Running for a Senate position at Stony Brook University is incredibly important to me because I am deeply committed to ensuring that all voices within our community are heard and represented. As a student, I’ve experienced both the challenges and the opportunities that come with being part of such a diverse and vibrant campus. I believe that our university’s strength lies in its diversity, and I want to help foster an environment where all students—regardless of their background, identity, or beliefs—feel valued and included.
If elected, I will prioritize establishing inclusive leadership that reflects the diverse needs and concerns of the student body. By creating transparent communication channels, I aim to empower students to actively participate in decision-making processes, ensuring that every student has a platform to voice their opinions. I also want to work toward creating policies that support underrepresented groups and advocate for resources that enhance their campus experience.
Additionally, equity will be at the core of my leadership approach. I will work to address disparities in access to opportunities, resources, and support services, ensuring that all students, particularly those from marginalized communities, can thrive. I plan to collaborate with student organizations, faculty, and administration to develop initiatives that foster a more equitable campus environment. By making sure every student’s voice is heard and respected, I hope to help build a Stony Brook University where everyone can succeed and feel truly included.
Md Azad
Living on campus for three years has taught me that college is more than just studying for a biochemistry exam—it’s about the connections we build, the opportunities we create, and the impact we leave behind on one another. As a third-year Biology B.S. student on the pre-med track, I have honed my leadership, advocacy, and community engagement skills, which I am eager to apply in the USG to benefit all students. Now, I want to bring that dedication to USG to ensure that every student’s voice is heard, and every concern is addressed.
My leadership experience as President of the Stony Brook Muslim Students’ Association (MSA) and Vice President of Hall Council has given me a deep understanding of what it takes to foster inclusivity, collaboration, and meaningful change. I have worked extensively with student organizations, such as the Stony Brook Muslim Student Association, to improve communication, increase engagement, and enhance campus life. Through these roles, I have learned the importance of adaptability and listening to the needs of students—qualities I will bring to the Senate.
As a senator, I will advocate for initiatives that enhance student life, promote inclusivity, and provide vital resources, ensuring every student feels supported and empowered.
My priorities include:
● Expanding collaboration between student organizations to create more diverse and engaging events.
● Advocating for improved campus transportation, including safer biking options, expanded bus routes, and exploring new alternatives like e-scooters.

I am committed to ensuring that USG serves as a true advocate for the student body. I would be honored to have your support in making Stony Brook a more inclusive, accessible, and enriching place for all.
Minal Iftikhar
Hi! My name is Minal Iftikhar, and I am pursuing my second term in the USG Senate. Before and during my tenure in the USG Senate, all of my initiatives and advocacy have been rooted in producing tangible actions that have a measurable impact on students. Here is a little more about me:

These experiences have taught me the importance of turning ideas into tangible outcomes that positively affect our community. Here’s what I plan to focus on in my next term:

Osasikianua Amene
Hello, my name is Osasikianua Amene, and I am a third-year student at Stony Brook University. I am excited to run for a position in the Undergraduate Student Government Senate because I am deeply invested in the success and experience of my fellow peers. As a student in the EOP program and a commuter, I have firsthand experience navigating the unique challenges that come with balancing academics, campus involvement, and responsibilities at home. These experiences have shaped my perspective, and I believe they position me well to advocate for students who may feel overlooked.
The USG Senate plays a vital role in ensuring student concerns are heard and addressed, and I want to be part of that process. I am particularly passionate about supporting commuter students and ensuring they have access to the resources and representation they need to thrive at Stony Brook. I don't want them to struggle along the way. While there is already a commuter representative, I would love to contribute to those efforts and bring my own experiences into the conversation to continue improving the commuter student experience.
Beyond academics, I have held leadership roles on campus and understand the importance of working collaboratively to create meaningful change. My goal is to be a reliable and approachable representative. I want to be someone who listens, communicates, and takes action to improve the student experience. Stony Brook has given me so much, and I want to give back by serving in a role that allows me to uplift the voices of my peers. I hope to have the opportunity to represent you in the Senate!
Owen Larson
As a candidate for Senator at Stony Brook University, I am committed to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and financially responsible campus community. My platform focuses on three key areas: equity among undergraduate clubs, proper budgeting techniques, and ensuring every student feels welcomed and valued.
Equity Among Undergraduate Clubs
Student organizations are the heartbeat of campus life, providing spaces for leadership, creativity, and community. However, not all clubs have equal access to resources, funding, or institutional support. I will advocate for transparent and fair funding allocation processes, ensuring that both new and established organizations have opportunities to thrive. No club should struggle due to financial barriers when they contribute to the diversity and vibrancy of our campus.
Support for Proper Budgeting Techniques
A strong financial foundation is key to the success of any student organization. Many clubs face budgeting challenges due to a lack of guidance on financial planning. I will work to implement workshops and accessible resources that help club leaders manage their budgets effectively, ensuring they can sustain their activities and plan for long-term success. Additionally, I will push for clearer financial guidelines to prevent unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles that often hinder student initiatives.
Inclusion for All Students
College should be a place where every student—regardless of background, identity, or interests—feels valued and empowered. I will advocate for inclusive policies that promote accessibility, diversity, and student engagement. This means supporting events that celebrate different cultures and identities, ensuring club spaces are welcoming to all, and working to eliminate barriers that prevent students from participating in campus life.
By championing these values, I aim to create a campus that is fair, financially responsible, and welcoming for all. I ask for your support in making our student community stronger, more inclusive, and better equipped for the future.

Final Thoughts
Stony Brook is a place where paths are built, not just crossed. We have a diverse and talented student body, but we need stronger Student Initiative, Representation, and Engagement. Rich Chen
Hello everyone! My name is Rich Chen, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for a seat in the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate. I am running because every student deserves a voice in shaping our campus experience, and I am committed to being a strong advocate for our diverse student body. If I am elected as senate for the USG Senate I will prioritize transparency and communication. I would also expand access to counseling services and advocate for wellness programs, along with creating more opportunities for career resources and internship opportunities to support academic success. I would also strengthen student clubs and organizations, advocating for greater cultural representation to make a more inclusive space where students feel valued. I am passionate about making tangible improvements on campus and ensuring that USG truly reflects the needs and concerns of all students. My leadership experience, dedication, and willingness to listen make me the ideal candidate to serve you. Together, we can create a more inclusive, supportive, and dynamic campus. I would be honored to have your support.
Thank you,
Rich Chen
Ruqayah Mahmud
My name is Ruqayah Mahmud, and I am a rising sophomore majoring in Political Science and Journalism. I consider myself to be a very community-oriented individual, and believe that there are plenty of ways in which SBU falls short in its attempt to create a unified student body.
I am a fierce advocate for representation and inclusion, whether we’re talking about commuters, cultural groups, or transfer students.
My first objective would be to get more clubs involved with major events such as Spooky Brook and WolfieLand, to create a more cohesive student body and increase the appeal of being an active community member. As Spooky Brook is centered around Halloween, why not get affinity groups involved to bring their own cultural angle to showcase campus diversity? There are also plenty of especially newer clubs who fall under the radar both when it comes time to tabling opportunities and low budgets.
This past fall I was involved in increasing SBU student voter turnout and registration, and I am passionate about creating a more politically informed student body. While the next major election is in four years, I would like to put forward an initiative which educates the student body more regularly on the next senate and congressional elections, as well as local bills that are being passed within the district which affect the Stony Brook community. This type of messaging could be implemented through USG town halls or bolstered Center for Civic Justice (CCJ) marketing.
From my experience seeking research at SBU, I would love to see research become more accessible as well: especially for newer students who may not know about credit requirements and other barriers for RA positions. While the new Nexus SBU website has been created to make student-faculty research relationships more accessible, I believe that it could be made more robust and as a senator I would get involved with the library committees to work on this goal.
I am also interested in expanding the menstrual hygiene program and having products available in more campus locations. As someone who has taken advantage of the program myself I really do believe in the mission of this program and would advocate for additional funding and resources.
Rebuilding and enhancing the Commuter Assistant Program is another goal of mine. Many students have previously taken advantage of the program and have found it to be a helpful tool when transitioning to their college lives. As the number of commuters is projected to increase, improving the CA program is as important as ever.
I love working with a team and don’t have an issue with speaking out on the behalf of others. I am an open ear to all and pride myself on my integrity: I will truly try my best to accommodate the needs of every member of our undergraduate student body if given the opportunity to do so.
Safa Naheed Adnan Faridi
My name is Safa, and I am excited to announce my intent to run for a Senate position in our Undergraduate Student Government. As a dedicated student and an active member of our campus community, I am committed to making our university a more inclusive, transparent, and sustainable place for all.
I believe that student government should be a space where every voice is heard and valued. Transparency is essential in ensuring that students know how decisions are made and that their concerns are taken seriously. If elected, I will work to improve communication between student government and the student body, making sure that information about policies, funding, and initiatives is easily accessible.
Inclusivity is at the heart of my platform. As a Muslim student, I understand the importance of creating an environment where people of all backgrounds feel welcomed and respected. I will advocate for increased representation in student leadership, better cultural awareness programs, and spaces that reflect the diversity of our student body.
Aditionally, activism is a core value I hold dear. I believe that change happens when students come together to take action. One of my primary initiatives will be implementing a more effective recycling program on campus. Sustainability should be a priority, and I will push for more recycling bins in high-traffic areas, clearer signage, and educational campaigns to encourage responsible waste management.
Above all, I believe in leading with kindness. Student government should be about uplifting and supporting one another. I am excited to listen, advocate, and take action to make our campus better for everyone.
Samaira Pawa
Hi! My name is Samaira Pawa and I am running for At-Large Senator for Stony Brook USG. As a Health Sciences and Sociology major, with a focus on Public Health, representing the student body and ensuring every student has the best possible experience throughout their time here at Stony Brook University is my priority. I believe that as a school, it is essential for the student body to feel safe, included, and most importantly heard.
Throughout my time here as a student, I’ve been involved in several leadership initiatives including being a Peer Mentor, an Orientation Leader, and an Academic and Transfer Advising Services Intern. Additionally, I have been involved in USG as an Elections Board Member and Assistant to the President. These experiences have provided me with the skills and knowledge necessary to improve the experience of all students on campus. I understand the importance of reflection and awareness when it comes to various aspects of campus, which is why I am eager to implement my initiatives in addition to any ideas that students on campus may have. In regards to my personal initiatives, I am always open to feedback to ensure that everyone's voices are heard in the decisions I make and the actions I take.
My initiatives:
Mental Matters-As someone who has always valued mental health, I believe it is incredibly important to increase our access and discussion in regards to mental health. This past semester, I have begun working on Mental Matters, a project that aims to create a connection and impact on a deeper level between the students, staff, and mental health at Stony Brook University. I aim to foster an environment that is even more accepting and open to discussion and implementation of mental health activities and programs that can benefit everyone in the community. The program's goal is to bridge the gap between the student body and such matters that are faced to different levels and extents by individuals. Through Mental Matters, I will improve access to resources on campus in relation to mental health, increase discussions of mental health and similar topics, and discover issues that are campus specific and can be improved by the campus to benefit the students or audiences time and experience at SBU. With Mental Matters, I will incorporate interviews and activities centering around mental health topics, and partner with off campus brands and companies to create mental health campaigns and partnerships benefiting the students and our community overall.
Food Expansion-As many know, while there is a variety in food options on campus, there is always room for improvement. As senator, I’d like to focus on increasing the healthy food options on campus, which would also allow for easier access for students with dietary restrictions. My goal is to bring more options for various needs such as vegetarians, vegans, halal and kosher options, as well as options for people with food sensitivities like gluten and dairy intolerances. I’d also like to incorporate more choices for students with certain diets in mind, such as keto or mediterranean diet, ensuring that all types of students, whether gym goers or food lovers, have ample choices to look forward to. Additionally, I would like to work towards expanding collaboration with nearby off campus dining options to accept dining dollars. This would be a great way to continue to support the small businesses near our campus, while providing an increase in off campus options for students through the dining dollars we already have access to. Through my food expansion goals, I hope to promote diversity, health, and wellness in what we consume on campus.
Geothermal Energy-Implementing Geothermal Energy into our school would be of great benefit to the students. Geothermal energy is when heat energy that comes from the earth's core is used to generate heat and electricity, as well as cool buildings. By incorporating this into our campus, we’d not only reduce energy costs, but lower our carbon footprint as well. By utilizing the earth's natural heat for electricity, heating, and cooling, we can ensure more funding is available for other aspects of our campus such as student programs, services and scholarships, all while combating climate change! As senator, my goal is to work with AERTC, also known as the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center towards adding geothermal energy to our campus.
As your senator, I will do my best to incorporate ideas and initiatives that benefit the students on campus and make all of our experiences at Stony Brook University the best it can be. Thank you for taking the time to read through my statement. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me at samaira.pawa@stonybrook.edu :)
Sophia Dimont
Hello everyone!
My name is Sophia Dimont, and I am a current Senator running for next year’s USG Senate! I am a second-year student majoring in Sustainability Studies, with a concentration in Societies, Economics, and Governance.
I hope that you will put your trust in me to make Stony Brook a more inclusive, sustainable, and student-centered campus. With your support, I will advocate for greener initiatives, improved student resources, and a stronger voice for our community in campus decisions.
My qualifications for this position include my time as a University Scholar in the Fall of 2024, and my service as Vice President of the Model United Nations on campus. In both of these positions, I have been devoted to bringing meaningful and memorable experiences to Stony Brook students.
As a Senator this semester, I have already started working on improving knowledge of Stony Brook’s campus resources by advocating for changes to the Honors Program’s 101 curriculum for incoming freshmen. In my conversations with students and Fellows in the program, I learned that the curriculum should include deeper discussions, more emphasis on mental health, and better guidance on utilizing campus resources effectively. By starting these discussions, we can help freshmen build a strong foundation for their futures at Stony Brook. As this work continues, I hope you’ll reach out to me with your own feedback so this curriculum can be at its best!
If I am elected for next year’s Senate, I will work to advocate for increased sustainability initiatives on campus. I am passionate about the environment and hope I can help make Stony Brook a greener place by reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable packaging in dining halls. I also plan to bring greater awareness to the limitations of our current recycling program, in order to maximize the amount of recycled materials that come out of our campus. Currently, Stony Brook’s recycling program requires that all food residues be either washed off or excluded from recycling bins—otherwise, the entire load of these materials could be rejected.
Finally, I believe in the power of student voices. Your concerns, suggestions, questions, and ideas are what drive meaningful change at Stony Brook, and I am devoted to making sure you are heard. Don't hesitate to contact me at: sophia.dimont@stonybrook.edu
I would be honored to have your vote. Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
Soua Arai
My name is Soua Arai, and I am a sophomore majoring in psychology. While I have never been involved in student government before, I believe that stepping into this new experience is important to growth -not just as an individual, but as a community. I am running for USG Senator because I know I can bring fresh perspectives, strong leadership, and an open-minded approach to improving student life at Stony Brook University.
Being a part of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), I have experienced firsthand the power of support, inclusivity, and opportunity in higher education. EOP has strengthened my commitment to advocating for equity, diversity and student engagement. Also being a member of the Japanese Student Organization (JSO) and being involved with other cultural organizations/clubs, I have connected with students from various backgrounds and seen both the strengths and the divides within our campus community. While Stony Brook is home to a wide range of cultures and perspectives, it can sometimes feel divided. I want to foster more collaboration between students and encourage a campus culture that celebrates shared experiences rather than staying in separate spaces.
Beyond culture engagement, I want to enhance student life as a whole. Too often, students see Stony Brook as just a palace for classes, with many commuters leaving early and others going home on weekends. I want to create a campus environment that encourages students to stay, connect, and engage with one another. By advocating for more student-driven events, better shared spaces, and initiatives that promote social interaction, I believe we can make Stony Brook a place where students genuinely enjoy spending their time.
As senator, my role would be to listen, advocate, and act on behalf of all students. Whether that means addressing academic concerns, campus resources, or community building. I am decisive, open-minded, and eager to hear the voices of my peers. If elected, I will work to create a more inclusive, engaging, and connected campus experience while ensuring that every student has a voice in shaping their university life. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to meaningful improvements for all students.
Steven reganato
I am a commuter who grew up 15 minutes from Stonybrook university and I have siblings who have gone here as well. When it comes to school spirit and pride I believe there aren’t many people who top me. I am passionate about club and sport participation at this school and I want the future Stonybrook students to love every bit of their experience here.
Yadira Suquilema-Lema
As a proud Latinx woman, a dedicated pre-law student, and an active leader on campus, I am committed to fostering a more inclusive, supportive, and empowering environment for all students. Through my involvement in the Latin American Student Organization, Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity (Mock Team), and my work in Student Life, I have gained firsthand experience in advocating for students, building community, and creating opportunities for academic and professional growth.
My passion for law stems from a deep-rooted commitment to justice, equity, and representation. As an aspiring lawyer, I understand the importance of strong advocacy, and I strive to apply those principles to my work on campus. Whether mentoring fellow students, organizing events that celebrate and uplift diverse voices, or ensuring that underrepresented communities have the resources and support they need to succeed.
If allowed to lead and represent my peers, I will work to expand professional development opportunities for students pursuing careers in all paths that our university has to offer. I will advocate for more inclusive programming that reflects the diversity of our campus. As a first-generation college student, I know the importance of having a community that makes you feel welcome with open arms. This is why I strive to make students from all backgrounds feel at home from the moment they arrive on campus.
I can firmly say I believe true leadership is about service, and I am committed to using my platform to uplift others and ensure that every student feels seen, heard, and valued. Together, we can build a stronger, more united Stony Brook campus community.
Zurabi Kochiashvili
As a dedicated Stony Brook student and a commuter from Brooklyn, I am committed to making our campus a place where every student—regardless of background or circumstances—feels supported, heard, and empowered. If elected as your Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senator, I will advocate for meaningful changes that enhance student life, academic resources, commuter support, innovation, and campus infrastructure. My goal is to ensure every student has access to the resources they need to succeed and thrive at Stony Brook.
MY VISION AND KEY PRIORITIES
As your USG Senator, I will focus on five key areas that directly impact student success and well-being:
1. Strengthening Student Life & Engagement
• More social and networking events will help students connect with peers, faculty, and industry professionals. I will collaborate with the Undergraduate Student Government to organize engaging events that foster community and professional growth.
• Students should have an easier way to introduce petitions and propose resolutions in the Senate. I will work to streamline this process so that concerns are actively addressed.
• I will ensure that club budgets are distributed equitably and that students have a clear understanding of the funding process.
2. Expanding Academic Support & Research Opportunities
• Course registration can be stressful, especially when required courses fill up quickly. I will push for additional sections of high-demand courses to ensure students can take the classes they need without being placed in overcrowded lectures.
• More tutoring services and structured study groups will provide students with the academic support they need to succeed. I will work to expand these resources across all disciplines.
• Flexible scheduling options, including more hybrid courses and recorded lectures, will benefit commuters, athletes, and students with demanding schedules. I will advocate for policies that make learning more accessible to all students.
• Research opportunities should be more accessible to undergraduate students across all fields. I will advocate for clearer pathways for students to connect with faculty research projects, and better promotion of available research programs.
3. Enhancing Support for Commuters & Residents
• As a commuter from Brooklyn, I understand the challenges that many students face traveling long distances. I will push for expanded lounge spaces, additional lockers, and other resources to make campus more commuter friendly.
• Transportation and parking remain major concerns for commuters. I will collaborate with university administration to explore solutions such as increased shuttle services, better parking management, and improved commuter resources.
• The high cost of on-campus housing makes it difficult for many students to live near campus. I will advocate for lower housing prices and better dorm maintenance to make on-campus living more affordable and comfortable.
4. Empowering Student Innovation & Tech Growth
• Student innovation and entrepreneurship should be better supported. I will support increased funding for hackathons, coding competitions, and innovation challenges that allow students to develop and showcase their ideas.
• More accessible makerspaces and tech labs are essential for students interested in robotics, 3D printing, and software development. I will push for expanded access to these resources.
• Many university websites and apps are outdated and difficult to use. I will advocate for updates to ensure a smoother and more modern student experience.
5. Improving Campus Infrastructure & Facilities
• I am committed to improving campus infrastructure and ensuring that classrooms are properly maintained, renovated, and equipped with comfortable seating.
• Many students struggle to find suitable study spaces, especially during peak exam periods. I will push for the expansion of seating in libraries and academic buildings to accommodate student needs.
• Outdoor spaces should be more inviting and student friendly. I will advocate for campus beautification initiatives, including better-maintained green spaces, additional outdoor seating, and expanded relaxation areas that promote student well-being.
• Dining options on campus need improvement. I will push for a greater variety of food choices, expanded dietary accommodations, and more affordable meal options.
Why Vote for Me?
As a Computer Science major, I bring a problem-solving mindset and a strong passion for advocacy and innovation. My firsthand understanding of student challenges, combined with my dedication to student representation drives me to push for real and tangible change.
By electing me as your senator, you are choosing a representative who will work tirelessly to address your concerns, fight for meaningful reforms, and create a more inclusive and supportive campus environment. I am eager to collaborate with students, faculty, and administrators to implement the changes that matter most.
Together, we can make Stony Brook University an even better place to learn, grow, and thrive. Vote for me!
Uotam Heeralall
I am Uotam Heeralall, a sophomore majoring in Biology and Economics. In my freshman year, I was greatly involved in my building’s Hall Council. I actively planned and hosted large-scale events tailored toward the needs of residents. I later went on to be involved in the National Residence Hall Honorary. I represented Stony Brook at various leadership conferences, including the:\
Spring Leadership Conference at Cornell University
National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH) annual conference at New Mexico State University
Regional Leadership Conference at Suny Oneonta.
I believe I have effectively represented SBU externally, and now it is my goal to support and advocate for my students within our institution.
As someone who has experienced the strengths and shortcomings of USG and various other clubs and organizations on campus, I believe it is only fitting that I implement some of the initiatives that I see fit to resolve any shortcomings. Ultimately, my goal is to improve your experience at Stony Brook!
Here is an outline of some of my planned initiatives:
I plan to increase awareness of the Career Center by organizing interactive workshops and seminars across campus, particularly aimed at freshmen who often remain unaware of the Center’s extensive resources. While SBU 101 theoretically promotes the Career Center, it does so only briefly, leaving many students uninformed. By partnering with the Career Center and offering incentives for students to attend, I anticipate strong attendance at these events, ultimately encouraging broader and more frequent use of the Career Center’s services.
Collaborate with the Office of University Affairs to enhance the SBU 101 course by incorporating the Career Center as a required component. In my experience, students are required to complete assignments involving various campus events followed by written reflections. Similarly, they could attend a resume-building or career coaching session at the Career Center and submit a reflective paper. I understand it is important to balance academics and student life, but our ultimate goal as university students is to succeed in the workplace, and the Career Center is instrumental in achieving that. Since SBU 101 aims to introduce students to campus resources, it should highlight the Career Center as one of the most valuable tools available.
I aim to provide greater support for smaller campus clubs and organizations, helping them gain recognition and potentially grow into larger organizations. Despite Stony Brook's diverse environment, the university still lacks specialized clubs that accommodate specific niches. I propose creating a team of advisors who specialize in developing new clubs, ensuring they have the guidance needed to succeed. Additionally, it is my goal to promote more frequent tabling activities, particularly around the Student Activities Center. Currently, large-scale tabling events occur only once or twice each semester, which limits exposure for many organizations. By encouraging clubs and organizations to have regular tabling sessions, students would be better informed about the various clubs on campus, ultimately bringing greater awareness.
